Beneficial effects of Ankaferd Blood Stopper on dermal wound healing: an experimental study

Abstract: Ankaferd Blood Stopper(®) (ABS) is a folkloric medicinal plant extract used as a haemostatic agent in traditional Turkish medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of ABS on the healing of dermal wounds in a rat model. Twenty Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups. Standard full-thickness skin defects were created on the back of the rats. In the control group (group 1), dressings moisturised with saline were changed daily. In the study group (group 2), the wounds were cleaned dai… Show more

“…To our knowledge, this is the only study reporting ABS having a positive effect on wound healing. [31] The effects of ABS on different tissues and healing has been studied previously. [5,6,10] Okumuş et al [5] investigated the basic histopathological changes under a light microscope in deep tissue injuries as well as remote organs such as brain, heart, kidney, and liver, when ABS was applied on the punctured femoral vein region in rats.…”

“…ABS has been used as a local haemostatic agent in surgery, but it was also shown to promote healing (5,9). Its effects on soft-tissue healing have been investigated (17,(19)(20)(21), but not in a STZ model of diabetes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to histologically assess the effects of ABS on collagen 4, blood GSH levels, and LPO to evaluate its potential effects in early-stage soft-tissue healing on STZtreated rats.…”

“…Collagen, which is beneficial for endoepidermal growth and therefore healing, is a major functional extracellular matrix protein in the dermal layer of the skin (20). Collagen 4, VEGF, and TGF-β are commonly used markers of healing potential (24,26,27,(30)(31)(32) and were evaluated in this study as well.…”

“…Few studies have been published evaluating the effect of ABS, which seems to be an effective hemostatic agent, on wound healing [14,15] . Isler et al [14] investigated the effects of ABS on early bone healing using a rat tibia defect model.…”
