Beneficial effects of hydrocortisone and papaverine on a model of pulmonary embolism induced by autologous blood clots in isolated and perfused rabbit lungs

Abstract: These findings suggest that vasoconstriction and inflammatory mediators play an important role in the physiopathology of PE, as neither PAP increases nor oedema were observed in the PpG and a reduction of oedema and PAP was seen in the HG group. The decrease in oedema and PAP in the acellular group strongly suggests a key role of circulating blood cells.

“…Papaverine, in particular, has been demonstrated to reduce platelet aggregation brought on by ADP as well. Such an outcome might have contributed to the better results observed in the papaverine-treated group in [ 45 ]. It was discovered that it inhibits voltage-gated Ca 2+ channels in a concentration-dependent manner, resulting in the relaxation of tracheal smooth muscle [ 46 ].…”

“…Papaverine enhances cerebral blood flow by immediate vasodilatory activity on cerebral blood vessels, which may be linked to its capacity to block phosphodiesterases and calcium channels ( Sayama et al, 2006 ). Additionally, papaverine plays a role in pulmonary edema through its vasodilator effects on the major blood vessels, particularly the coronary and pulmonary arteries ( Trejo et al, 2007 ). Papaverine is categorized as an antiarrhythmic drug because it decreases conduction and prolongs the refractory period ( Karagueuzian et al, 2017 ).…”
