Beneficial Effects of Phenolic Compounds on Gut Microbiota and Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: The human intestine contains an intricate community of microorganisms, referred to as the gut microbiota (GM), which plays a pivotal role in host homeostasis. Multiple factors could interfere with this delicate balance, including genetics, age, medicines and environmental factors, particularly diet. Growing evidence supports the involvement of GM dysbiosis in gastrointestinal (GI) and extraintestinal metabolic diseases. The beneficial effects of dietary polyphenols in preventing metabolic diseases have been su… Show more

“…In highbush blueberry fruits, 44 flavonoids were previously identified, which were represented by quercetin and myricitin glycosides and chlorogenic acid [ 29 , 53 ]. The sugar part in the identified flavonoid glycosides from fruits was represented by glucose, galactose and arabinose [ 54 ], which corresponds to the results of our studies conducted for its leaves.…”

“…Diosmetin mainly inhibited the growth of Bacillus spp. and Helicobacter pylori [ 54 ]. Based on these results and the related reports about the bioavailability and biological activity of related ingredients, it can be expected that Cirsium species, especially CJF, have similar pharmacological activities, such as hepatoprotection and the potential to be developed into functional products with biological activity for therapeutic use.…”
