Beneficial Effects of Probiotic Consumption on the Immune System

Abstract: Background: The gastrointestinal tract is one of the most microbiologically active ecosystems that plays a crucial role in the working of the mucosal immune system (MIS). In this ecosystem, the consumed probiotics stimulate the immune system and induce a network of signals mediated by the whole bacteria or their cell wall structure. This review is aimed at describing the immunological mechanisms of probiotics and their beneficial effects on the host. Summary: Once administered, oral probiotic bacteria interact… Show more

“…However, unresolved questions concern the scopes of local and systemic effects as well as the molecular pathways responsible for interactions with host cells. The local immunomodulatory contributions of LAB have been demonstrated in several intestinal mucosal epithelial cell lines and mucosal immune cells (e.g., T lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and monocytes-macrophages) [33,34].…”

“…For instance, anticancer effect can be achieved by multiple mechanisms: production of compounds with anticarcinogenic activity, reduction of the activity of enzymes involved in the carcinogen formation, binding and degradation of mutagens, reduction of nephrotoxic and immunosuppressive mycotoxins, inhibition of tumor cell proliferation and induced cancer cells apoptosis. Likewise, immunomodulation effect might occur through enhanced production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, immunoglobulins and/or phagocytosis of pathogens (Azad, Sarker, & Wan, 2018;Maldonado Galdeano, Cazorla, Lemme Dumit, Vélez, & Perdigón, 2019).…”

“…Revolutionary discoveries about the importance of the human microbiome for human health have also accelerated further development of the probiotic sector. Scientific evidence of probiotic benefits on human health is continuously expanding, and there are enough data to justify investigation of probiotics for treatment or prevention of several disorders from antibiotic and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease to anxiety, depression, and wound healing [9][10][11][12]. e phrase "when administered," in the definition of probiotics, can refer to the application of probiotics into the gut as well as on other sites (e.g., skin and vagina).…”
