Benefits of pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn) fruit extracts to weight changes, total protein, and uric acid in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) as an animal model of acute renal failure

Abstract: Aim:The occurrence of acute renal failure (ARF) cases continues to increase every year. Some of the cases are due to nephrotoxic effect caused by overdose of antibiotic consumption or abuse of the drug, gentamicin. An antibiotic therapy that can be used to overcome in such a case is the pomegranate extracts. However, until now, studies using pomegranate for cases of ARF have not been done. This study aims to determine changes in body weight, the levels of total protein (TP), and the levels of serum uric acid (… Show more

“…All parts of this plant can be used in traditional remedies for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Pomegranate seeds were used for regulating urine discharge and the burning sensation of urine; its seed oil, juice, flowers, and peel are used for protection against nephrotoxicity [ 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 ], and the extracts for renal failure [ 66 ] and renal arteries [ 67 ]. The anti-hypercalciuria and anti-urolithiasis effects of this plant attracted considerable attention toward pomegranate for use in the prevention of renal calculus formation.…”

“…In previous studies, pomegranate juice has shown nephroprotective effects through stabilizing and improving the kidney function of rats [ 25 ]. In addition, the use of pomegranate extract effectively maintains normal total protein levels in rats with acute renal failure [ 26 ]. Pomegranate has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities to the extent that it is referred to as a “superfruit” by some [ 27 ].…”
