Benevolent behavior of Kleinia grandiflora leaf extract as a green corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in sulfuric acid solution

Herein, An examination into the corrosion inhibition of mild steel (MS) in 1.0 M HCl by the Chicoriumintybus extract as a green inhibitor had been achieved via chemical, electrochemical and morphological measurements. The effect of KI additives on corrosion inhibition efficiency was carried out using a weight loss method. The results reveal that the Chicoriumintybus extract inhibited the corrosion reaction by adsorption onto the metal/solution interface. Inhibition efficiency, increased with the Chicoriumintybus concentration and synergistically increased with the presence of KI. The addition of iodide ions to the Chicoriumintybus extract raises inhibition efficiency of 74 to 99%. Polarization data suggest that the Chicoriumintybus extract acts as a mixed inhibition-mechanism. This observation was further corroborated by the fit of experimental adsorption data to the Temkin isotherm. The results were confirmed by AFM, SEM images and ATR-IR for the surface morphology.

Extracts of natural products are used as corrosion inhibitors since they are non toxic and environmentally friendly. Especially the extracts of leaves have attracted the attention of many researchers. Usually weight loss methods are adopted to measure the corrosion inhibition efficiencies. The mechanistic aspects have been investigated by electrochemical studies such as polarization study and AC impedance spectra. Sometimes noise measurement has also been used. The protective films formed on the metal surface have been analysed by surface analysis techniques such as SEM, EDAX, FTIR and AFM. Experiments have been carried out at various temperatures also. Various adsorption isotherms have been proposed. Of all the metals and alloys used, mild steel has been extensively used. The experiments have been carried out in acid medium and neutral medium (sodium chloride). The extracts of the leaves contain many ingredients which have polar groups such as N, O, S and P atoms. The lone pair of electrons present on these atoms are pumped on to the metal surface. This controls the corrosion process.

Herein, A study of corrosion inhibition of mild steel (MS) in 1.0 M HCl by Tetraclinis articulata extract as a green inhibitor had been achieved via chemical and electrochemical methods. Open circuit potential (OCP), Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical frequency modulation tests had been examined. Adsorption & thermodynamic activation parameters had been recorded and evaluated. Temperature effect on the mild steel corrosion inhibition in a range between 298-328 K had been evaluated. The mild steel samples surface morphology in existence and nonexistence of Tetraclinis articulata extract had been evaluated via FT-IR spectroscopy measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. The gained data confirmed the protective layer formed on mild steel surface and demonstrated that the compounds which had been found in Tetraclinis articulata extract act as an effective and good inhibitors. Tafel curves demonstrated that the tested compound proceeds as a mixed-type inhibitor. The adsorption mode of Tetraclinis articulata extract had been matched with the Temkin adsorption isotherm model. The inhibition efficiency (IE%) had been found to improve with improvement of Tetraclinis articulata extract doses achieving maximum inhibition efficiency more than 80% at 298K.
