Benign circumscribed lesions of the liver diagnosed by ultrasonically guided fine‐needle biopsy

Abstract: Cytologic evaluation of aspirates obtained by ultrasonically guided puncture of circumscribed lesions leads to the diagnosis of a malignant lesion when tumor cells are detected. In the absence of tumor cells, it remains uncertain whether the focus had been biopsied correctly, since the histologic diagnosis of a benign focal lesion can only occasionally be made by means of cytologic smears. Cases are presented showing circumscribed lesions of the liver. With a cut-biopsy fine needle, small cylinders of tissue w… Show more

“…Fine needle biopsy can be of diagnostic utility, even though it carries a risk of bleeding [22]. More recent reports, however, claim that fine needle biopsy is safe and effective [23]. Percutaneous fine needle biopsy was performed in 5 of our patients without complications.…”

“…It is likely that the small needle calibre in our complication kept the amount of bleeding moderate. Guided histologic sampling has been successfully performed with fine needles (12). No treatment is required for a small liver hemangioma.…”

“…Local anesthesia was applied in the aspiration of very small lesions and sometimes to reduce the anxiety of the patient. Before the aspiration, bleeding diathesis was excluded by measuring Accepted for publication 12 July 1989. the bleeding time, the platelet count and the prothrombinproconvertin time. The patients were kept in bed for six hours after the aspiration and stayed in the hospital until the next morning.…”

“…With use of a 20-gauge CN. histologic diagnosis of hemangioma has been obtained in 100% of the cases [46,47] (table 3). Up to now reported cases are too rare for the percu taneous biopsy to be recommended as safe diagnostic procedure for the hepatic heman gioma: anyway the puncture is dangerous when the lesion is subcapsular [44], Hepatic abscesses are a specific indication for US-guided puncture, which, at the same time, can be both a diagnostic and a thera peutic step.…”
