Benign Fibroepithelial Polyp Arising in the Bronchus

Abstract: Benign endobronchial polyps are rare findings that present a diagnostic dilemma not only for the clinician but also for the pathologist. We describe a man with repeated visits to emergency departments for coughing spells who ultimately underwent bronchoscopy and biopsy. The biopsy specimen was initially diagnosed as a leiomyoma, but the final pathologic diagnosis of the gross specimen was a benign fibroepithelial polyp. We present the clinical history of this patient along with a brief review of the published … Show more

“…Multiplanar and 3D imaging of the central airways is often useful for demonstrating polypoid lesions in the trachea or bronchus. Bronchoscopy usually shows 3 to 100 mm mobile and pedunculated polypoid masses protruding from the bronchial wall (nonspecific, mostly seen above the segmental bronchus) (2,3,5,8,11).…”

“…Fibroepithelial polyps of the bronchi are rare with only a few case reports in the English literature [6] [7]. According to these case reports, it manifests as an endobronchial polypoid nodule that is covered with normal respiratory mucosa, consisting of fibrovascular stroma with or without few inflammatory cells and adipocytic components [6] [7].…”

“…Some reports have classified fibroepithelial polyps as inflammatory, while others have argued that the inflammation is a result of the intermittent respiratory tract obstruction caused by its mass effect [7]. Other studies show that the pathogenesis of this lesion is unknown, although chronic bronchial stimulation by several agents (e.g.…”

“…An endobronchial location was observed by BORCZUK [2] in only 6% of these tumours. Very few cases of fibroepithelial polyps have been described in the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The aetiology of fibroepithelial polyps is unknown.…”
