“…Our samples reported in this study, i.e. those collected from streams and seepages fed by melting snow at Komarek slopes showed lower taxonomical diversity than the earlier samples from lakes (Skácelová et al 2013) and soil crusts (Skácelová et Barták 2014) from James Ross Island (Ha-wes et Brazier 1991, Kopalová et al 2012. in their study determined relatively broad spectrum of cyanobacterial species in seepages at Komarek slopes.…”

“…In this study, we focused on seepages and streams located on the northern slopes of Berry Hill. The site has been studied with-in last decade with a special emphasis to biodiversity of cyanobacteria and diatoms (Elster et al 2008, Kopalová et al 2012. The seepages reported in our study are supplied by water primarily from frozen ground and melting snow fields covering hill tops and northern slopes below Berry Hill.…”

“…Contrary to the Antarctic diatom flora, which has been recently revised based on a more narrow morphology-based species concept (ex. Van de Vijver et al 2010a, Kopalová et al 2012, Taylor et al 2014, the Arctic diatom morphological taxonomy is insufficient at this time to make fine-scale comparisons between habitats. Moreover, Pinseel (2014) have identified a high number of new diatom taxa ready to be described.…”

“…Since then, apart from several sparse Stauroneis records from the latter region (Zidarova et al 2008;Kopalová et al 2012) and the description of one new taxon (Zidarova et al 2009), almost no new data for the genus Stauroneis in Maritime Antarctica were published, greatly limiting our knowledge on the diversity and biogeography of the genus in this region.…”
