Benthic primary production and nutrient cycling in sediments with benthic microalgae and transient accumulation of macroalgae

Abstract: Annual rates of sediment denitrification and sediment-water fluxes of oxygen and nutrients were quantified at two shallow locations, Virksund and Ulbjerg, in the Limfjorden, Denmark. The sediment was sandy and colonized mainly by bivalves with a wet weight of 2,508 g m Ϫ2 at Virksund and 572 g m Ϫ2 at Ulbjerg. A benthic microalgal community was present throughout the year, and for 1-2 months in the summer, floating macroalgae partly covered the sediment. Annual budgets for the sediment both including and exclu… Show more

“…In these vegetated sediment systems, benthic microalgae are an important food source for crustacean and gastropod herbivores, which in turn are eaten by fish and crustaceans (52). Through the production of oxygen via photosynthesis, microphytobenthos also "indirectly" control key biogeochemical processes in the sediment (53,54) and, in theory, could counteract effects of expected global warming by sustaining net benthic autotrophy (46).…”

“…Nitrification rates were calculated by the sum of NO 3 -efflux and p 14 n, assuming absence of benthic microalgae (Rysgaard et al 2004). Ammonification has to be considered as a potential ammonification rate and was calculated dividing the TOU by the C/N ratio, assuming a CO 2 /O 2 ratio of 1.2 (Dalsgaard 2003). Denitrification efficiency (DE), sensu Eyre and Ferguson (2009), was calculated as the ratio between the DIN flux and the N 2 production via denitrification/anammox.…”

“…In general, substrate limitation is not considered rate limiting in coastal shallow water sediments, as a net flux of nutrients and DOC from the sediment to the water column is typical (Dalsgaard 2003). However, due to the tight spatial and temporal coupling between production and consumption of organic matter (e.g.…”
