Benzylamine-Assisted Noncovalent Exfoliation of Graphite-Protecting Pt Nanoparticles Applied as Catalyst for Methanol Oxidation

Abstract: A novel method has been developed to physically exfoliate graphite and uniformly disperse Pt nanoparticles on graphite nanoplates without damaging the graphene structures. A stable aqueous suspension of graphite nanoplates was achieved by benzylamine-assisted noncovalent fuctionalization to graphite and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. A uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles was then prepared on the graphite nanoplates, where the benzylamine acts as … Show more

“…[20][21][22] However, the graphene prepared as a catalyst support was unexceptional in the form of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for practical reasons. 29 In order to improve the deposition of catalyst, while still maintaining the high stability and conductivity of the GNPs, physical decoration of the GNPs was attempted with either macromolecules 22 or small molecules 29 to link metal NPs to the GNPs. 22,26 Then, graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) came into consideration, given that this material has a high specic surface area like RGOs 27 but considerably less defects; 28 they are also easily accessible from graphite, which is naturally abundant as a resource.…”

“…The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol has been widely studied for the construction of direct methanol fuel cells [11,54,55]. During the past decade, Pt has been commonly employed as a catalytic material for the electrooxidation of methanol [56,57,58]. Although Pt-based catalysts show high catalytic activity for the MOR in acidic media, they often suffer from strong chemisorption of poisoning intermediates during the reaction [59,60].…”
