“…The increased placental weight following glucose treatment together with the birthweight is an indication for the additional effect on the function of the placenta. The chorion epithelium has a particular importance for the processes of metabolic transport and hormonal synthesis in the placental membrane [4,6,17]. By demonstrating quantitatively and morphometrically the decrease in mature syncytium in the placental resorption villi of SGA newborns [10] and by demonstrating the good correlation between maternal HPLandestriol values and the proportion of mature syncytium [11] we have shown that "mature" syncytium is also well functioning syncytium.…”

“…Al though our patient was allowed to deliver vaginally at term, facilities for emergency cesar ean section was available at all times. There is limited information about the prognostic val ue of the antenatal finding of umbilical cord vessel aneurysms, the influence of its location in a vein or an artery and whether its size or location in regards to the placenta would affect the outcome; on histopathological ex amination of the placentas this was not a very unusual finding, with an incidence of 2.4% [7], Until more information is available we advise close monitoring of any patient with a suspected aneurysm of the umbilical cord ves sels and delivery as soon as lung maturity is documented, in a place where facilities for emergency cesarean section are available.…”

“…True aneurysms are the least common abnormalities found in either the cord or placental surface vessels [6], They are usually found in the umbil ical vein, located near the fetal insertion of the cord. Associated findings include abnormal cord insertion, circumvallation and partial mo lar changes in the placenta [7], The use of color flow or pulsed-Doppler study may help to delineate a vascular abnormality from other cord lesions. In addition it may provide data regarding the effect of the cyst on blood flow.…”

“…Therefore, numerous authors (reviews by LEMTIS [18], GAGEL [5], and KIRCH-NER [10]) have attempted with their contributions to solve the difficult problem of the physiologically correct perfusion of the placenta. In spite of remarkable advances in the field, the bilateral long-term in vitro perfusion of the human placenta has not yet been accomplished satisfactorily.…”
