BEST potential in testing the eV-scale sterile neutrino explanation of reactor antineutrino anomalies

Abstract: Baksan Experiment on Sterile Neutrino (BEST) [1][2][3] is presently at the stage of production of the artificial neutrino source 51 Cr, the gallium exposure will start in July and proceed for three months. While aiming specifically at investigating the Gallium neutrino anomaly (SAGE and GALLEX experiments) [4][5][6], BEST can do more and it is tempting to estimate its ability in testing sterile neutrino explanation of antineutrino (reactor) anomalies. We observe a moderate sensitivity to the region in model pa… Show more

“…Originally this idea was proposed for θ 13 measurement using the mono-energetic neutrino emitters and later for sterile neutrino searching [10][11][12][13]. The main candidate for the neutrino source is a well known isotope 51 Cr, which has a few disadvantages: requires huge activity around 5 MCi in order to get rid of the overlapping solar background and a short life-time 27.7 days [2,3,14]. Later, antinetrino emitter was investigated [15].…”

“…This allows to sample the rate at two different distances from the source, at 0.4 m and 0.8 m. At the time of writing, the 50 Cr source material is irradiated at the SM-3 reactor in Dimitrovgrad. Measurements are due to start in July 2019 [139]. Like for solar neutrinos, electron neutrinos from the 51 Cr source will interact in the target by inducing the conversion of the isotope 71 Ga to 71 Ge.…”
