Best Practices for Minimally Invasive Procedures

Abstract: Techniques and instrumentation for minimally invasive surgical procedures originated in gynecologic surgery, but the benefits of surgery with small incisions or no incisions at all have prompted the expansion of these techniques into numerous specialties. Technologies such as robotic assistance, single-incision laparoscopic surgery, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery have led to the continued expansion of minimally invasive surgery into new specialties. Wi… Show more

“…The aerosolization of tissue can contain gases, tissue particles, toxic chemicals, blood and blood by-products, and a number of hazardous chemicals. Ulmer 26 supports implementing a laparoscopy checklist to reduce potential error from mechanical equipment failure. 24 Use of high-efficiency filtration masks also is recommended for personnel as an additional precaution to help minimize exposure to surgical smoke and prevent inhalation of the larger particles in plume.…”

“…Educational information, product literature, and facility policies and procedures should be conveniently located for easy access. Ulmer 26 supports implementing a laparoscopy checklist to reduce potential error from mechanical equipment failure. An expansion of this concept could be a checklist that would identify key considerations to reduce potential thermal injuries.…”

“…The use of technologies such as laparoscopy led to a continuous expansion from minimally invasive surgery to robotic surgery. Thus, perioperative nurses and other members of the surgical team need to be updated on new technologies and instrumentation, as well as on techniques and challenges involved in the use of these resources to ensure patient safety (5) . Robotic surgery is a new revolution of modern surgery, associating all the benefits of minimally invasive surgery with the advantage of image stability, combined with third dimension resource (3D), reduction of tremors in the surgeon's hand and the mobility of intracorporal instrumentation, especially in operative areas of more restricted spaces (6) .…”
