The rising usage of fossil fuels increases greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, leading to global climate change. Thus, addressing global environmental challenges requires a widespread switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Renewable energy reduces GHG emissions, extreme weather, and climate change while boosting energy efficiency. Indonesia ranks among Asia-Pacific's top five renewable energy producers. Indonesia, a vast country with abundant natural resources, has seen a rise in renewable energy demand as consumption has increased. Thus, this study examines Indonesia's renewable and sustainable energy technologies' existing position, possibilities, and future improvements. With 420 gigawatts (GW) of theoretical renewable energy capacity, Indonesia has great potential. This capacity includes 208 GW of solar, 75 GW of hydro, 61 GW of wind, 33 GW of biofuel, 24 GW of geothermal, and 19 GW of micro-hydro. The need to increase renewable energy consumption in Indonesia is driven by environmental and economic growth laws. This review study is expected to guide future research on renewable energy technology in Indonesia. This study would guide energy-related policies, particularly renewable energy ones, to meet future demands and goals.

Energy is a basic household necessity closely related to human health and well-being; unfortunately, not all households have equal access to energy. This condition is referred to as energy poverty, wherein a household lacks access to or cannot afford basic energy services to meet its daily needs. The goal of this research is to analyze the determining factors of the probability of households experiencing energy poverty in Indonesia, focusing on Household Demography and Household Expenditure factors. Using household survey data from IFLS4 (2007) and IFLS5 (2014) and employing Multinomial Logit analysis, this study aims to capture the differences between groups of energy-consuming households. The research findings indicate that households found it easier to access energy (especially gas) after the implementation of the energy conversion policy from kerosene to gas, which began in 2007. Based on the estimation results, the probability of households experiencing energy poverty in Indonesia in 2007 is determined by Education, Income, Spouse Work, Communication Cost, and Health Cost, while in 2014, it is influenced by Education, Spouse Work, Electric Cost, Fuel Cost, Health Cost, and Non-food Consumption. Other indicators of Household Demography and Household Expenditure show different results for each category and period. To address energy poverty, a change in perspective and reform of programs in the energy sector are required. The government can also provide energy subsidies and compensation to poor and vulnerable populations.

Indonesian urban population increase has led to increased energy demands and housing inventory shortages. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) supplies collective housing for low-income communities (MBR). The development of low-carbon collective housing has been thought to suppress the abrupt increase in household-sector energy demand and lead to mitigated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In tropical climates, it is essential to reduce the dependence on air conditioners (AC) to suppress energy consumption. Therefore, to investigate the relationship between cooling methods and energy consumption, this study surveyed the energy consumption per household and classified the existing cooling patterns of ACs, fans, and window openings in collective housing with different income groups in Indonesia. The results confirmed that the use of AC increases household energy consumption. Meanwhile, the implementation of natural ventilation (NV) showed significantly lower energy consumption with a high thermal satisfaction of more than 80% during the day and 90% at night; thus, both energy consumption reduction and indoor thermal comfort improvement could be achieved through these methods. The findings of this study serve as a starting point for verifying the energy saving effects of air conditioning habits with the consideration of socio-demographic changes for the purpose of decarbonizing collective housing, including future predictions and energy simulations.
