Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Tensions Between Scientific Judgement and Statistical Model Selection

Abstract: Discussions of model selection in the psychological literature typically frame the issues as a question of statistical inference, with the goal being to determine which model makes the best predictions about data. Within this setting, advocates of leave-one-out cross-validation and Bayes factors disagree on precisely which prediction problem model selection questions should aim to answer. In this comment, I discuss some of these issues from a scientific perspective. What goal does model selection serve when al… Show more

“…A recent article by Navarro (2018) provided a detailed discussion on both specific and broad issues within the area of model selection. Although this article was a comment on the specific critique of Bayesian leave-one-out cross-validation by Gronau and Wagenmakers (2018a), Navarro (2018) also made several broader points on the philosophy of modelling, and how we should evaluate these formalized theories.…”

Although this article was a comment on the specific critique of Bayesian leave-one-out cross-validation by Gronau and Wagenmakers (2018a), Navarro (2018) also made several broader points on the philosophy of modelling, and how we should evaluate these formalized theories. These broader points made by Navarro (2018) appear to have been the most impactful part of the entire debate so far, with Navarro's article currently (as of the 18 th of January, 2019) having over 3,400 downloads and 122 shares, compared to the 678 downloads and 11 shares of the original article by Gronau and Wagenmakers.…”
