Beyond constant comparison qualitative data analysis: Using NVivo.

Abstract: The purposes of this paper are to outline seven types of qualitative data analysis techniques, to present step-by-step guidance for conducting these analyses via a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software program (i.e., NVivo9), and to present screenshots of the data analysis process. Specifically, the following seven analyses are presented: constant comparison analysis, classical content analysis, keyword-in-context, word count, domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, and componential analysis. “…After three rounds of comparing and line-by-line analysis all the themes for five open-ended questions were finalised. The responses were coded under two or more themes if the response incorporated multiple elements (Leech & Onwuegbuzie, 2011). The responses were ranked from the highest to the lowest number of occurrences under the respective categories.…”

“…NVIVO was used to store and manage the transcripts and facilitated the coding of responses. After an initial round of transcript reading, each of the interviewee transcripts were then rigorously re-reviewed, by creating free nodes which are the less-organised ideas and segments emanating from the interview transcripts (Leech and Onwuegbuzie, 2011). Free nodes based on Thomas' (2006) general inductive approach then helped the researchers to later identify higherlevel themes which were linked to the questions around high-performing healthcare systems Dennis, 2011a, 2011b) and more specifically, on leadership and strategy.…”
