Beyond Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Colorectal Metastasis: The Expanding Applications of Radioembolization

Abstract: As a relatively safe outpatient procedure, radioembolization can potentially be used to treat any type of tumor within the liver, primary or metastatic. The safety and effectiveness of radioembolization in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) has led many groups to explore its application in other malignancies. Moreover, other organs, such as the lungs and kidneys, have been explored as targets for therapy. Although the most data for radioembolization is relat… Show more

“…Such examples would include metastases from breast, uveal melanoma, neuroendocrine tumours, sarcoma, oesophageal, endometrial, lung, ovarian and squamous cell carcinoma of the anus. 37,38 In spite of its relatively recent development, radioembolization has yielded great promise and potential as a safe and efficacious treatment for locally advanced liver cancer. 39,40 In both salvage and first-line therapy, radioembolization has demonstrated high response rates.…”

“…Furthermore, chemotherapy with mitotane, used as the mainstay treatment, yields response rates of only up to 31% [7]. Treatment of metastatic liver disease with surgical resection, percutaneous ablation, and endovascular chemoembolization has also been attempted, with variable success rates debated [8]. Clearly, these techniques would prove of limited use in the setting of diffuse liver metastatic disease.…”

“…Although RE treatment has been applied to a limited number of liver metastases of other primary tumors, tumor response close to HCC and colorectal metastasis has been reported (47). With the increase in the literature and experience, RE treatment may become a standard option in all types of primary and secondary liver tumors for which surgery is not intended as a general approach and which do not benefit from routine treatment (14,29,47).…”
