Beyond “Natural” and “Cultural” Heritage: Toward an Ontological Politics of Heritage in the Age of Anthropocene

Abstract: The critique of the separation of natural and cultural heritage is now well established. Rather than repeat arguments against what many would now acknowledge as an artificial separation, this paper considers the implications of working within the expanded field that is created for heritage when the dissolution of the boundaries between natural and cultural heritage is taken as given. I argue that embracing this dissolution allows us to reorient and reconceptualize heritage. Heritage is understood here as a ser… Show more

“…Concurrently, a shift has occurred in how historic urban areas are conceptualized. The traditionally siloed realms of nature and culture, tangible and intangible, and people and place are increasingly challenged by the way that we understand and experience the world around us (Harrison, 2015). Rather than being restricted to static artefacts, heritage is now understood to be something that is living, practiced and experienced (UNESCO, 2011).…”

“…Survey work is returning to the foreground, with the potential to play an even greater role in shaping urban development in the current age of integrative approaches and big data (Harrison, 2015). Recognizing the changing roles of inventories, the Durand Inventory aimed to refine Hamilton's survey approach and contribute an inclusive, low-cost, contextual inventory strategy to the international dialogue on inventory methodology.…”

“…Merely considering 'the possibility that, in the decades to come, people will eventually become "heritaged-out"' (Cameron 2010, 212) has a revolutionary ring to it and appears somewhat heretical. Few alternatives to the prevailing forms of heritage management, the conservation ethos and its perceptions of the future have ever been discussed or even mentioned (but see Cameron [2010]; Harrison [2015]; Lavau [2015]). Although there may be non-Western alternatives to heritage management and associated futures, these too have only begun to be systematically explored (e.g.…”

“…When heritage, can be regarded as whatever traces of the past that speaks to present-day cultural, political and social needs rather than an innate quality [1], [2], the question of who it is that can influence this kind of resonance process immediately becomes essential. A heritage narrative is never comprehensive, and an authenticated narrative is always the narrative of someone [3], [4].…”

“…Such critical investigation of how theory and practice correspond is needed to qualify the idea of heritage as a generative force in constructing common futures [7]. Just as importantly, it is necessary to create the potential conditions to reach common understandings.…”
