The rapid emergence of mindfulness programs within organizational settings reflects an amalgam of humanistic, spiritual, and managerial perspectives. While impact studies have focused on effects of mindfulness programs on employees, how such programs are implemented by trainers, managers, and employees and how the mindfulness concept operates within organizations are not well understood. In this study, we draw upon Laclau's notion of the 'empty signifier' to argue that mindfulness programs work to encode oppositional organizational elements, drawing on competing discourses that shape, in practice, how mindfulness evolves within organizations. Through an empirical qualitative study of organizational mindfulness practitioners, we show how practitioners leverage heterogeneous meanings to represent oppositions within organizations, and that in the course of mindfulness programs, these oppositions are framed to align with dominant managerial perspectives. We discuss the ramifications of these findings to understanding the uses of mindfulness for ideological purposes while speculating on the emancipatory possibilities of mindfulness as a solidaristic and collective practice.

The present essay examines the festival as a form of organizing and as a metaphor for contemporary organizations. Drawing upon classical and contemporary perspectives on festival, we focus on social ambivalences and how these are enacted and mediated through festivals. Specifically, we argue that festivals mark a tension between linear and cyclical dimensions of social time. Next, we argue that formal institutional and communitarian principles are mediated through festival. Finally, we argue that festivals mark a tension between reflexivity and social critique on the one hand and mass spectacle on the other, and problematize the notion of bodily enjoyment as a form of social consciousness. We discuss the implications of these three ambivalences-in the notion of time, the notion of community, and the notion of reflexivity-for contributing to contemporary organizational discussions. Truth is the bacchanalian revel, where not a member is sober.

Tutkimus tarkastelee monitieteisesti etnografisen aineiston avulla mindfulnessia ja työn hämärtyviä rajoja uusliberalismin ja jälkimaallistumisen viitekehyksessä. Aineisto kerättiin kansainvälisessä intensiivistä tietotyötä tekevässä muille organisaatioille palveluja tarjoavassa asiantuntijayrityksessä. Asiantuntijatyölle on nykyään tyypillistä työn rajojen hämärtyminen sekä jatkuvat neuvottelut ja epävarmuus rajoista. Siksi tämä maaperä on hedelmällinen erilaisille työpaikkojen mindfulness-ohjelmille, jotka ovat nousseet organisaatioiden henkilöstöhallinnon ja johdon välineeksi. Mindfulnessin uskotaan auttavan läsnäolossa, keskittymisessä ja tarkkaavaisuudessa ja lisäävän siten työntekijöiden tuottavuutta ja työssä jaksamista. Kenttätyömuistiinpanoista, haastatteluista, päiväkirjoista ja yritysmateriaaleista koostuvaa aineistoa analysoimalla tarkasteltiin merkityksiä ja pyrkimyksiä, joita mindfulness tuottaa työelämäkontekstissa. Aineiston analyysi nosti esille neljä teemaa, jotka ilmenevät sekä organisaatio- että yksilötasolla: holistinen työntekijä, henkisyyden herättely ja torjunta, henkisyys ratkaisuna työn aiheuttamiin ongelmiin ja henkisyys suorituksena. Aineistoa analysoitaessa kävi ilmeiseksi, ettei tutkimuskirjallisuudesta löytynyt sopivaa teoriaa selittämään ja yhdistämään tutkimuksessa esiin nousseita teemoja. Toimivan teorian puutteessa siirryttiin aineiston analyysissa grounded theorya hyödyntäen teemat yhteen kokoavaan teorianmuodostukseen. Näin analyysista nousi esiin uusi teoria uushenkisestä työstä, jossa yhdistyvät uskontososiologian ja laajemmin uskonnontutkimuksen ajatukset jälkimaallistumisesta ja henkisyyden kasvusta sekä organisaatiotutkimuksen tunnetyön teoriat. Uushenkinen työ tarkoittaa työntekijän henkisyyden valjastamista osaksi työtä. Tavoitteena on organisaation kannalta hyvä lopputulos – esimerkiksi parempi työhyvinvointi, tuloksellisuus, työsuoritus, työteho, resilienssi tai vaihtuvuuden ja työuupumuksen vähentäminen. Tämä ei sulje pois yksilön hyvinvoinnin kasvua, mutta uushenkisen työn fokus on organisaatiossa ja sen päämäärissä.
