The urban fabric is a fundamental small-scale component of urban form. Its quantitative analysis has so far been limited either in its geographical extent or in the diversity of components analysed. Moreover, the planning approach has traditionally privileged an aerial perspective. A new approach integrating the pedestrian point of view is proposed. Spatial analysis procedures are implemented with a twofold objective: identifying urban fabrics and studying their spatial organization within a large metropolitan area. The former is achieved through multiple fabric assessment, a three-step protocol using a network-based partition of urban space: (i) a set of skeletal streetscape indicators is implemented on each spatial unit, considering different constituents of the urban fabric; (ii) spatial patterns on the street network are identified, applying geostatistical analysis to each indicator; and (iii) spatial patterns with Bayesian clustering are recombined, allowing the identification and characterization of urban fabric types and subspaces within the city. This methodology is tested on the French Riviera metropolitan area, where nine families of urban fabric are identified. Disentangling the spatial organization of urban fabrics represents the second objective of this paper: the geographical distribution of urban fabrics is investigated, applying mathematical morphology and variography while considering networkconstrained topological contiguities.

Mekânsal tasarım alanında 1960'lı yıllardan itibaren önem kazanmaya başlayan çevresel psikolojinin bir dalı olan ekolojik psikoloji ya da yaklaşımlar ekoloji biliminden ve temel ilkelerinden faydalanarak insan ve çevresi arasındaki koparılamaz bağdan, her ikisini bir bütünün parçaları olarak ele almaktan bahseder. Araştırmalarda giderek yaygınlaşan Davranış Konumu Kuramı ve Olanaklılık Kuramı ekolojik yaklaşıma örnek verilebilir. Türkiye'de ve dünyada yapılmış olan ekolojik yaklaşımlı çevre-davranış araştırmalarının hangi konuları hangi tekniklerle ele aldığı bu çalışmada incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar, bu çalışmalarda ele alınan konuların çok çeşitli olduğunu ve kullanılan tekniklerin de çeşitlilik ve esneklik sergilediğini ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca ekolojik yaklaşımların araştırmacılara hem sayısal veriler elde etme imkânı sağlarken hem de toplumsal, sosyal, kültürel boyutlarda da yorum yapabilme imkânı sağladığını ortaya koymuştur.

Having an overall view of the spatial patterns of urban fabrics in a vast metropolitan area is paramount for understanding the emerging spatial organization of the contemporary metropolis. The French Riviera is a polycentric metropolitan area of more than 1200 km2 structured around the old coastal cities of Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Monaco. XIX century and early XX century urban growth is now complemented by modern developments and more recent suburban areas. A large-scale analysis of urban fabrics can only be carried out through a new geoprocessing protocol, combining indicators of spatial relations within urban fabrics, geo-statistical analysis and Bayesian data-mining. Applied to the French Riviera, nine families of urban fabrics are identified and correlated to the historical periods of their production. Central cities are thus characterized by the combination of different families of pre-modern, dense, continuous built-up fabrics, as well as by modern discontinuous forms. More interestingly, fringe-belts in Nice and Cannes, as well as the techno-park of Sophia-Antipolis, combine a spinal cord of connective artificial fabrics having sparse specialized buildings, with the already mentioned discontinuous fabrics of modern urbanism. Further forms are identified in the suburban and “rurban” spaces around central cities. The proposed geoprocessing procedure is not intended to supersede traditional expert-base analysis of urban fabric. Rather, it should be considered as a complementary tool for large urban space analysis and as an input for studying urban form relation to socioeconomic phenomena.
