Beyond the Interpretive: Finding Meaning in Qualitative Data

Abstract: This theory paper compares two different qualitative analysis techniques for the same data: interpretive thematic analysis and deconstructive analysis. Recently qualitative methodologists have called for a move away from coding to what they call "postqualitative" analysis and "thinking with theory". They argue that because interpretive coding is conducted without regard to theory and breaks the data into small pieces, it is inherently reductive, leading to a superficial and self-evident set of themes. In contr… Show more

“…During and after data collection, the qualitative researcher familiarised herself with the data by reading the transcripts multiple times. The researcher coded all the interviews using the interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA), and deductive logic with the help of QSR-NVivo 10 software for data management [23,24]. IPA helped in capturing the detailed overview of participants' lived experiences, as it is not bound by any preexisting theoretical preconceptions [23].…”

“…The a priori codes were derived from the key questions in the interview guide. The interpretative coding approach helped in fragmenting and reorganizing data to identify themes (21). After assigning codes to transcripts, summaries were prepared from the coded data.…”

“…To some extent, in data analysis, I borrowed and/or adapted methods and concepts from inquiry traditions that are consistent with grounded theory (an inductive process of data analysis in building substantive theory and constant comparison methods), phenomenology and heuristic inquiry (meaning-making of experience), case study (the concept of bounded, integrated system), constructivism/constructionism (construction of knowledge), and hermeneutics (interpretation and context) (Merriam and Associates, 2002; Patton, 2015). But I also engaged in “thinking with theory” (see Douglas, 2017), used deductive data analysis by establishing several a priori themes, and did not bracket but rather acknowledged my assumptions (Patton, 2015). By asking “what do I wish to accomplish?” in every phase of the process and choosing to see practices as “supportive resources” to reach the study goals, I embarked on “reflective pragmatism” (Gergen, 2014, p. 58).…”
