Biafine Applied on Human Epidermal Wounds Is Chemotactic for Macrophages and Increases the IL1/IL6 Ratio

Abstract: Using a model of pure epidermal wounds in normal human volunteers, we have studied the effects of Biafme® emulsion firstly on inflammatory cell migration, vascular permeability and cytokine release during the first 24 h, and secondly on epidermal wound healing by measuring transepidermal water loss from day 1 to day 7. Under these conditions, Biafme does not improve epidermal healing, in contrast to what is observed with bleeding dermoepidermal wounds. Our results suggest that the effects of Biafine are essent… Show more

“…In this survey, 27.8% of facilities used a product designed to restore the skin’s barrier function and promote moist wound healing. These products are thought to act as barriers that preserve moisture, enhance re‐epithelialization, promote enzymatic digestion of necrotic tissue and enhance phagocytosis of necrotic debris and bacteria 34,35 . In addition to promoting wound healing, these dressings cover the wound and protect the area from external contamination and infection and prevent further irritation and friction.…”

“…1 Biafine is an oil-inwater emulsion containing alginate that may be used in the treatment of superficial partial-thickness burns. Biafine has been shown to be chemotactic for macrophages and to increase IL-1/IL-6 ratio in suction blister wounds in human volunteers, 9 suggesting that it may have a role as an anti-inflammatory agent for treatment for cutaneous wounds.…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Biafine (Labortoires Medix, Houdan, France) is an oil-in-water emulsion containing alginate, which may be used in the treatment of superficial partial-thickness burns. A recent study has shown that biafine is chemotactic for macrophages and increases the interleukin (IL)-1/IL-6 ratio in suction blister wounds in human volunteers 9 ; however, it was reported that biafine may cause contact dermatitis. 10 We are unaware of any prior studies comparing the clinical effectiveness of biafine and SSD in the treatment of superficial partial-thickness burns.…”
