Bias in research

Abstract: By writing scientific articles we communicate science among colleagues and peers. By doing this, it is our responsibility to adhere to some basic principles like transparency and accuracy. Authors, journal editors and reviewers need to be concerned about the quality of the work submitted for publication and ensure that only studies which have been designed, conducted and reported in a transparent way, honestly and without any deviation from the truth get to be published. Any such trend or deviation from the tr… Show more

“…The data collected from the three hospitals excluded private hospitals. Whenever cross-sectional studies occur exclusively in hospital settings, there is the potential for 'admission bias', and so the women studied do not reflect the population of SA [22]. The maternal and neonatal services available at each of the three hospitals may influence the interpretation of results.…”

“…It revealed a significant relationship between RER and Lumen %CO2 (F(1,63) = 18.54, p < 0.0001, y = 6.111x -0.7445; Figure 4), with a fixed but not proportional bias, as expected from the nature of the different units (x-intercept = 0.1218). A Bland-Altman plot was done to discuss limit of association (Giavarina, 2015) between RER and Lumen %CO2. Bland-Altman plots are used to calculate the level of agreements between two measures by studying the mean difference between measurements and constructing limits of agreement (Bland and Altman, 1986).…”

“…Based on sera availability, quantity and quality, the sampling method used in the study resulted in some years, provinces, state veterinarian areas and farms being excluded, under or over represented, thus creating selection bias (Šimundić, ). Similar challenges were observed with other studies, especially those involving wildlife species (Table ).…”
