Bibliometric Methods in Management and Organization

Abstract: We aim to develop a meaningful single-source reference for management and organization scholars interested in using bibliometric methods for mapping research specialties. Such methods introduce a measure of objectivity into the evaluation of scientific literature and hold the potential to increase rigor and mitigate researcher bias in reviews of scientific literature by aggregating the opinions of multiple scholars working in the field. We introduce the bibliometric methods of citation analysis, co-citation an… Show more

“…Bibliographic coupling measures the proximity of two citing publications, while co-citation analysis measures the similarity between two cited publications (references). Additionally, bibliographic coupling is a static approach while cocitation analysis is a dynamic approach (Vogel & Güttel, 2012, Zupic & Čater, 2015. In the case of bibliographic coupling the number of shared references between two publications remains constant over time (Zupic & Čater, 2015), while in co-citation analysis the frequency with which two publications are cited by other publications can change as new publications can appear.…”

“…Note that 232 of the 400 articles are included in this analysis based on the application of specific selection criteria described in the appendix. Bibliographic coupling is, together with co-citation analysis, one of the two main quantitative methods of bibliometric research to map the structure and development of scientific fields and disciplines (Zupic & Čater, 2015). Both approaches are very powerful tools to analysis scientific fields and have been applied in various business areas (e.g., Durisin, Calabretta & Parmeggiani, 2010;Nosella, Cantarello & Filippini, 2012;Randhawa, et al 2016;Vogel & Güttel, 2012;Zupic & Čater, 2015).…”

“…A bibliometria é uma ferramenta para analisar como as disciplinas evoluem com base na estrutura intelectual, estrutura social e estrutura conceitual [6]. Os autores ainda sugerem que os métodos bibliométricos são complementares dos métodos tradicionais de revisão e de revisões estruturadas da literatura e, quando comparados com esses métodos bibliométricos, aumentam a objetividade desses tipos de estudos.…”

“…The bibliographic coupling (BGC) used herein is a bibliometric method that identifies the clusters of publications and those linked to each other through the same cited publication (Zupic & Čater, 2015). In essence, the number of co-coupled documents defines the strength of links and association (Boyack & Klavans, 2010).…”
