Sustainability reporting scholarly research: a bibliometric review and a future research agenda

Despite the substantial increase in sustainability reporting scholarly research, the comprehensive evaluation of scientific production in this area is scarce. This study combines the bibliometric and content analyses of sustainability reporting research to fill this gap. We map the development, conceptual structure, and thematic evolution of sustainability reporting scholarly research based on 1,053 Scopus peer-reviewed articles written by 2,071 scholars comprising 69 countries and published from 2000 to 2022. The findings suggest that sustainability reporting has witnessed exponential growth, moved from a “paucity” stage in 2000 to the “saturation” stage in 2022, and is still ongoing. The collaboration among institutions producing sustainability reporting research reflects “locally-centralized-globally-discrete” cooperation. The collaboration between developed and developing world research organizations can be termed the “North-South” divide. Authors have disciplinary or thematic similarities in their research interests (i.e., homophily impact). The study has explained the thematic categories and topics of interest in sustainability reporting. Based on our findings, we provide an agenda for future research directions. The study’s findings are of interest to scholars and practitioners in business, finance, and accounting.

The paper demonstrates the future of artificial intelligence in the Islamic Banks of Saudi Arabia which introduces with the meaning of artificial intelligence and the benefits which AI may bring with itself in the future. Further, how banks differ in their use of AI from the banks that do not use AI or use original intelligence (Artificial Neural Network) and the acknowledgement of 4 purely Islamic banks in KSA. The literature has analyzed the pros of AI in the Islamic banks taking into consideration machine learning, natural language processing, text mining through neural network of deep learning, algorithmic trading and robotics. It has further analyzed AI’s limitations with regards to its costs, technological unemployment, lack of human creativity and its accountability and regulation. Lastly, the literature has stated AI from the sharia’a point of view. In order to test hypothesis concerning future studies, it was important to collect data using purely Islamic banks. Upon various interpretations concerning AI’s accountability and its impact on sharia’a board, robot’s impact in the long run, AI’s ethics and its uses which people have already encountered and the time period for which AI may imitate human learning in the future- we find that generation Z and millennials are very influenced by AI and have positive views about its scope in the future. However, it is important to note that research limitations include no access to banking authorities due to the recovery after the pandemic of COVID-19 besides.

Shari'ah Supervisory Board (SSB) plays a crucial role in the Shari'ah governance (SG) and legal framework of Islamic banks. One of the main functions of SSB is to ensure that the products and services of Islamic banks conform to Shari'ah as set by the regulators. However, despite the essential role of SSB in the context of Shari'ah governance, bibliometric analysis in this topic is very limited. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to review the SSB and SG of Islamic banks to capture what has been done in this area of research and to suggest prospects for future research. Specifically, this study is to answer the following three research questions. First, how has SSB and SG research evolved and been disseminated; second, what key topics have been discussed in SSB and SG; and third, what are the characteristics of scientific collaborations in SSB and SG research between authors from various countries? This paper employed a systematic literature review (SLR) as its research methodology to identify the relevant studies, followed by a bibliometric analysis to gain insight into the role of SSB in the SG of IBs research and trends in its dissemination. This study finalised 148 publications between 2006 and 2022 upon screening the title and abstract using relevant keywords to address the research questions.
