The Bidder's organ and ovary of the Brazilian toad Bufo ictericus were studied by light microscopy, using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining. The expression and distribution of carbohydrate moieties was analyzed by lectin histochemistry, using 8 lectins with different carbohydrate specificities: Ulex europaeus (UEA I), Lens culinaris (LCA), Erythrina cristagalli (ECA), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Ricinus communis (RCA I), Aleuria aurantia (AAA), Triticum vulgaris (WGA), and Glycine maximum (SBA). The results showed that the Bidderian zona pellucida presented alpha-mannose, alpha-L-fucose, beta-D-galactose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and alpha/beta-N-acetyl-galactosamine residues. The Bidderian follicular cells showed the presence of beta-D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. In the extracellular matrix, alpha-mannose and alpha/beta-N-acetyl-galactosamine residues were detected. The ovarian zona pellucida showed alpha-L-fucose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, alpha/beta-N-acetyl-galactosamine residues, and alpha-mannose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues were detected in the follicular cells. Thus, the zona pellucida in both organs contains N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and alpha/beta-N-acetyl-galactosamine residues. alpha-L-fucose residues were detected in the zona pellucida of both organs, using different lectins. Considering that beta-D-galactose residue was absent from ovary but present in the Bidder's organ, this sugar residue may play an important role in follicle development, blocking the Bidderian follicles and preventing further development of the Bidder's organ into a functional ovary.

This work describes morphologic variations in the organs and structures of the male reproductive system in �haunus ornatus, analyzed independently from the alterations that promote structural variations. Seven adult samples were used, they were collected in Botucatu (São Paulo State, Brazil) during reproductive activity period. The specimens were dissected and rostrum-cloacal length measures were taken. Descriptive and biometrics anatomical analyses were also obtained. Three of these animals were sent to histological routine for the analysis of the testicular architecture, where it was schematized in vegetable paper with pen Indian ink. Statistical analyses (mean, standart deviation, Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's t and Simple Lineal Regression) were used for interpretation of the results. The testes of �. ornatus are cylindrical with white coloration and they possess a rudimentary ovarian structure, the Bidder's organ, in the testicular cranial extremity. The male reproductive system of �. ornatus presents conspicuous anatomical variations intra and interindividuals, especially to the form and size of the testes and of the Bidder's organ, which did not present relationship with the size of individual. As for the location, the testes are disposed ventral to the kidneys, but they are in different levels, accompanying differences attributed to the kidneys levels. The disposition and number of extensions in the abdominal fatty bodies is variable among the pair's members, and consequently among individuals. Histologically differences regarding the germ epithelium arrangement were not observed. The germ epithelium is arranged in seminiferous locule, therefore these characteristics seem to follow the pattern of the description for the other anurans. The morphologic heterogeneity for anatomical variations in that species were few significant. Thus, other studies are still necessary for the establishment of morphologic relations and its phylogenetic implications, as well as to understand how the evolutionary pressures act modeling this anuran structures anatomy.Keywords: amphibia�� testis�� Bidder's organ�� fatty bodies. Este trabalho descreve variações morfológicas nos órgãos e estruturas do aparelho reprodutor masculino em �haunus ornatus, analisados independentemente das alterações promotoras de variações estruturais. Foram utilizados sete exemplares adultos da espécie, coletados no Município de Botucatu (São Paulo, Brazil) na época de atividade reprodutiva. RESUMEN.-En la región anterior de los testículos de los machos de ciertos taxa de la familia Bufonidae se localiza el órgano de Bidder (OB), un ovario rudimentario no funcional que crece y se desarrolla parcialmente si los testículos son removidos. En esta investigación se analizó el efecto de hormonas y disruptores endócrinos sobre el crecimiento de los oocitos del OB de machos adultos orquidectomizados de la especie Rhinella marina. Machos adultos fueron orquidectomizados y sometidos a dosis diarias de una solución salina, atrazina y progesterona durante un periodo de dos meses y el efecto de dichas substancias fue analizado mediante observaciones en la morfología interna y externa y mediciones del diámetro máximo de los oocitos biderianos de los machos oquidectomizados.Todos los tratamientos exhibieron un incremento en el diámetro máximo de los oocitos biderianos. Los tratamientos que presentaron oocitos de mayor tamaño y con características correspondientes a estadios de la oogénesis posteriores, fueron el tratamiento con progesterona seguido por el tratamiento con atrazina + progesterona; sin embargo, se obtuvo una baja cantidad de oocitos crecidos. Los resultados sugieren que la hormona progesterona fue la que promovió un mayor crecimiento de los oocitos biderianos de machos orquidectomizados de la especie Rhinella marina. PALABRAS CLAVE: Atrazina, órgano de Bidder, orquidectomización, progesterona, vitelogénesis.ABSTRACT.-The Bidder's organ is located anterior to the testis of some taxa of bufonid toads ; it is a rudimentary non-functional ovary, which grows and partially develops if the testes are removed. In this research, we analyzed the growing effect of hormones and endocrine disruptors on Bidder's organ (BO) oocytes of orchidectomized adult males of Rhinella marina. Adult males were orchidectomized and subjected to daily doses of saline, atrazine and progesterone solutions for a two months period. The effects of these compounds were tested by observations in the internal and external morphology and measurements of the maximum diameter of the Bidderian follicles.All treatments showed an increase in the maximum diameter of bidderian oocytes after two months of treatment. Progesterone produced more advanced oogenesis stages than the ones with atrazine + progesterone. However, the number of grown oocytes in both cases was quite low. These results suggest that progesterone is the most suitable for inducing growth in the Bidderian oocytes of orchidectomized Rhinella marina male toads.
