Bidimensional Spectroelectrochemistry: application of a new device in the study of a o-vanillin-copper(II) complex

Abstract: A new bidimensional spectroelectrochemistry setup for UV-Vis absorption measurements has been developed. The new device has been used to follow electrochemical reactions using two different arrangements: 1) a near-normal configuration that supplies information about the processes taking place both on the electrode surface and in the solution adjacent to it, and 2) a long-optical-pathway configuration based on a mobile slit that controls the position of a light beam passing parallel and adjacent to the electrod… Show more

“…SEC joins the best of electrochemistry and spectroscopy together during an electron‐transfer process. As can be inferred, this multiresponse and “teamwork” technique has been used in a large number of fields, including, for example, electron transfer processes , chemical reaction mechanisms , side reactions , electrocatalysis , corrosion , conducting polymers , solar cells , memory devices , supercapacitors , synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles , carbon nanomaterials , characterization of metal complexes , liquid/liquid interfaces , electrochromic materials or study of compounds of biological interest , among others.…”

“…In this way, information about electrochemical processes taking place on the electrode surface and in the diffusion layer are deconvolved because normal configuration provides information about the surface and the adjacent solution while, at the same time, parallel configuration provides information only about the diffusion layer solution. Therefore, bidimensional SEC yields a complete picture about the electrode process and helps to distinguish, without any controversy, if the electrode process is a simple electron‐transfer or if there are other processes taking place and accompanying this electron‐transfer, as could be for example, an adsorption of the reaction products on the electrode surface .…”

“…UV/Vis absorption SEC experiments have been carried out to study and to determine IP. Two different optical configurations can be used to perform this type of analysis, the so-called normal and parallel configurations [ 25 , 26 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The experiments carried out in normal configuration provide information related to the processes that take place on the surface of the electrode, such as adsorption processes, and in the solution adjacent to it, such as the oxidation or reduction of a soluble molecule.…”
