Biflagellate spermatozoon of the poison‐dart frogsepipedobates femoralisandcolostethussp. (anura, dendrobatidae)

Abstract: This study describes the spermatozoa of the dendrobatids Epipedobates femoralis and Colostethus sp. using light and transmission electron microscopy. Both species possess a biflagellate spermatozoon, an unusual characteristic only previously reported in two anuran species belonging to the families Leptodactylidae and Racophoridae. The acrosomal complex of both species consists of a conical acrosomal vesicle and a subacrosomal cone, both of which cover the anterior portion of the nucleus, but to differing exten… Show more

“…1), the most parsimonious explanation is that they acquired their brightness independently from species of Epipedobates, some of which have similar patterns (Jungfer 1989). The distinctive karyotype of Allobates femoralis (Aguiar-Jr. et al 2002) and the structure of its spermatozoa (Aguiar-Jr. et al 2003) also favour a relationship with species of Colostethus rather than those of Epipedobates.…”

“…The few studies of this type that have investigated the Dendrobatidae have helped to clarify inter‐ and intrageneric relationships. Aguiar et al . (2003) provided the first description of completely biflagellated spermatozoa in two dendrobatid frogs, Epipedobates femoralis and Colostethus sp., and discussed the affinities between these taxa.…”

“…Studies on morphology, behaviour, sperm ultrastructure, cytogenetics and molecular analyses have been used to study dendrobatids in an attempt to elucidate their intra-family and inter-family relationships (Toft 1995;Zimmermann and Zimmermann 1988;Aguiar et al 2002Aguiar et al , 2003Aguiar et al , 2004aGarda et al 2002;Veiga-Menoncello et al 2003a,b, 2006a,b, 2007.…”
