Bifunctional Metal‐free Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Methanol and Diols from CO2 and Epoxide

Abstract: Currently world is facing a serious environmental concern in the steady increase in the CO 2 concentration in air and this is directly related to climate change. Thus, successful utilization of CO 2 into valuable chemicals is one of our primary goals. Herein, we have successfully fabricated a porous organic polymer PDVTA-1 via the free radical cross coupling between divinylbenzene and triallyl amine. This porous polymer is found to possess permanent porosity with a very high BET surface area of 915 m 2 g À 1 .… Show more

“…These conversions of CO 2 include the synthesis of formic acid, 3 methanol, 4 polycarbonates, 5 carbamates, 6 N-formamide, 7 urea, 8 polyethercarbonate polyols, 9 poly(hydroxy urethane)s, 10 oxazolidinone, 11 and so on. Among these chemicals, methanol is an important CO 2 -based renewable product 12 that has a significant commercial and environmental impact. However, CO 2 is highly stable in terms of thermodynamic and kinetically inertness, which poses a significant obstacle in reaching this goal.…”

“…It is well known that carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is the primary greenhouse gas in industrial emissions, which exacerbates the greenhouse effect and poses a serious ecological and environmental threat, such as an increase in the global average temperature, rise in the sea level, disruption of the biological and food chains, and increase in the probability of the occurrence of extreme weather. [1][2][3][4][5] Although many strategies, such as developing new, clean, environment-friendly, and renewable energies, have been adopted to reduce the CO 2 concentration in the atmosphere, fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas, and petroleum, still dominate today. Over the past few decades, due to industrialization and urbanization, global CO 2 concentrations have risen rapidly, already exceeding 420 ppm, which reached a record high.…”

“…Over the past few decades, due to industrialization and urbanization, global CO 2 concentrations have risen rapidly, already exceeding 420 ppm, which reached a record high. 5,6 It was at this time that a clean energy source, carbon-free nuclear energy, came into existence. However, in the process of nuclear power production, a kind of radioactive material, such as 129 I and 131 I isotopes, is released.…”

“…CO 2 is nontoxic, nonflammable, renewable, and inexpensive as well as a highly abundant C1 building block for organic synthesis. 38,39 Among the various chemical routes for CO 2 utilization, photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 has intrigued enormous interest in day to day research. Therefore, developing novel and sustainable photocatalysts with high catalytic activity is the biggest goal of scientists around the world.…”

“…and organic matter has become one of the most significant greener approaches in scientific research to solve carbon emission and energy crises. A large amount of energy is necessary to transform CO 2 into a variety of different components because of its relatively less reactivity and thermodynamic and kinetic stability.
