Bifurcated Optical Fiber Sensor for Weight Measurement System

Abstract: Analyze some of the basic principles involved in the design of optical fiber based displacement sensor and to apply it to design a weight measurement system. Bifurcated optical fiber sensors can have many applications. Having high sensitivity to short distances, bifurcated optical fiber (Y-sensor) is well suited not only for control applications as position sensors, but also for gauging and surface assessment. In addition, they can be utilized as non contact pressure sensors if used in conjunction with reflect… Show more

“…Optical force sensors are advantageous in that their dielectric construction renders them immune to EMI [2]. Many practical designs have been reported, employing straight step-index fibers [3], straight graded-index fiber [4], fiber Bragg gratings [5]- [7], coiled fiber [8], bent fiber [9], bifurcated fiber [10], polarimetric birefringent fiber [11], optical microfiber Fabry Perot [12], cross fibers [13] and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser [14]. A number of these designs are based on plastic optical fibers (POFs), due to their relatively low cost and flexibility which leads to a higher sensitivity and a wider dynamic-range [15].…”

“…Reflective intensity-modulated fiber optic sensor (RIM-FOS) are widely used for such physical parameters measurements as distance, vibration, sound, pressure, temperature and acceleration because of their advantages over other fiber sensor, including simple structure, flexible design, reliable perform, low cost etc [1][2][3][4][5]. So far the research of RIM-FOS is based on numerical simulation by establishing the mathematical model through geometry optic.…”
