Event prediction is the ability of anticipating future events, i.e., future real-world occurrences, and aims to support the user in deciding on actions that change future events towards a desired state. An event prediction method learns the relation between features of past events and future events. It is applied to newly observed events to predict corresponding future events that are evaluated with respect to the user's desired future state. If the predicted future events do not comply with this state, actions are taken towards achieving desirable future states. Evidently, event prediction is valuable in many application domains such as business and natural disasters.The diversity of application domains results in a diverse range of methods that are scattered across various research areas which, in turn, use different terminology for event prediction methods. Consequently, sharing methods and knowledge for developing future event prediction methods is restricted. To facilitate knowledge sharing on account of a comprehensive classification, integration, and assessment of event prediction methods, we combine taxonomies and take a systems perspective to integrate event prediction methods into a single system, elicit requirements and assess existing work with respect to the requirements. Based on the assessment, we identify open challenges and discuss future research directions.

Multi-perspective approach for curating and exploring the history of climate change in Latin America within digital newspapers

This paper introduces a multi-perspective approach to deal with curation and exploration issues in historical newspapers. It has been implemented in the platform LACLICHEV (Latin American Climate Change Evolution platform). Exploring the history of climate change through digitalized newspapers published around two centuries ago introduces four challenges: (1) curating content for tracking entries describing meteorological events; (2) processing (digging into) colloquial language (and its geographic variations5) for extracting meteorological events; (3) analyzing newspapers to discover meteorological patterns possibly associated with climate change; (4) designing tools for exploring the extracted content. LACLICHEV provides tools for curating, exploring, and analyzing historical news paper articles, their description and location, and the vocabularies used for referring to meteorological events. This platform makes it possible to understand and identify possible patterns and models that can build an empirical and social view of the history of climate change in the Latin American region.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are becoming increasingly complex and interconnected as they attempt to meet the demands of evolving society. As a result, monitoring and maintaining them becomes a more complex and demanding task for control system operators and cyber defenders. While the literature on visualization techniques in the context of cybersecurity is extensive, the same cannot be said for studies on visualization for the security of cyber-physical systems. This paper aims to fill that gap by: 1) defining the main features of a visualizations workflow for security visualizations in cyber-physical systems. The workflow includes the acquisition of cyber and physical data, processing of data, selection, and configuration of both visualization tools and end-user interactions. 2) Providing an overview of cyber-physical security visualization systems, with a focus on smart grids as a case study. Finally, we use the perspectives gained from this analysis to provide insights and directions for future research and design of cyber-physical visualization techniques.
