Bilateral correction of asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy

Abstract: Several operations for asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (ATD) have been used previously, but they all have disadvantages. We report a 25-year-old male ATD patient who had significant depressions on both sides of thorax. We designed a special operation for him, which had not only eliminated the depression, but also increased the volume of the thorax. The results show that this operation is a reasonable choice for this kinds of patient.

“…Until now, we have applied Wang technique to almost all types of thoracic deformity surgeries, including not only pectus excavatum [6,7,10] , but also pectus carinatum [9] , barrel chest [11,12] , flat chest [13] , Poland syndrome, asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (Jeune syndrome) [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] , thoracic insufficiency syndrome and other deformities [21][22][23] . Our experience shows that this method is a simple and practical fixation method.…”

“…In addition to being used in pectus carinatum surgery, we also found that Wenlin procedure can be used for all protrusion deformities of the anterior chest wall. For example, for Wenlin chest [9,10] , barrel chest [11,12] , asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy [13][14][15] , etc, this procedure can be used to eliminate the deformities and obtain satisfactory results. However, like all other operations, Wenlin procedure can also has defects.…”

“…Therefore, besides being used for pectus excavatum, Wang procedure can also be used in all other special deformity with depression. These deformities include: (1) Asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (ATD) [17][18][19][20] . Since the chest wall of type II ATD has obvious depression, Wang procedure can be used for correction [17] .…”

“…Since the chest wall of type II ATD has obvious depression, Wang procedure can be used for correction [17] . In addition to using Wang procedure directly, we also use Wenlin procedure for correction, which can be regarded as a combination of two Wang procedures [18][19][20] . When these operations are used, the effect is significantly better than Nuss procedure; (2) Poland syndrome.…”
