Bilateral juvenile renal dysplasia in a Norwegian Forest Cat

Abstract: Renal dysplasia is defined as a condition of disorganised development of renal parenchyma due to abnormal differentiation. The case of a 5-month-old intact male Norwegian Forest Cat with a history of polyuria and polydipsia is reported. Ultrasonographic examination showed a slight enlargement of kidneys. Biochemical parameters, haematological examinations and clinical signs were compatible with chronic renal failure (CRF). Histological examination was correlated with a primary tubular disorganisation and modif… Show more

“…In human medicine, RD is one of the principal causes of childhood end-stage renal failure. In veterinary medicine, it has been described in several species, including cattle (Dunham and others 1989, Simon and others 1999, Ohba and others 2001, Castro and others 2007, Maxie and Newman 2007, Aresu and others 2009, Philbey and others 2009). In Japanese Black cattle, RD shows autosomal recessive inheritance, caused by CLDN16 mutations (Hirano and others 2000, Ohba and others 2000, Hirano and others 2002).…”

“…Studies related to renal dysplasia in felines do not describe cartilaginous or osseous metaplasia in the urinary tract (ARESU et al, 2009;AZIZI et al, 2010), which highlights the importance of the alterations described here.…”

“…These signs are observed in dysplastic kidneys of humans and domestic animals (CIANCIOLO; MOHR, 2015) but not in felines. There are reports of amyloidosis in Abyssinian felines, polycystic kidneys in Persians (CIANCIOLO; MOHR, 2015), infantile polycystic kidneys in Persian mestizos (LEES, 1996), unilateral renal dysplasia in non-breed felines (AZIZI et al, 2010), and juvenile bilateral renal dysplasia in Norwegian Forest cats (ARESU et al, 2009). …”

“…Dysplasia arises as a result of abnormal differentiation of cells leading to disorganised development of the renal parenchyma. 24 Bilateral juvenile renal dysplasia has been reported in a 5-month-old intact male Norwegian Forest Cat that presented in chronic renal failure. 24 On ultrasound examination, both kidneys were mildly enlarged but otherwise unremarkable.…”
