Abstract:Pseudogout is an acute presentation of one type of crystal deposition disease in which calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals are found in the joint spaces of synovial joints. In this case, a 56-year-old caucasian male presented with right sided preauricular swelling, temporomandibular joint arthralgia and restricted mouth opening; he developed identical symptoms on the left side two days later.
“…[5][6][7][8][9] Among these cases, only 2 articles present instances of bilateral TMJ involvement with pseudogout. 10,11 The most common treatment described in these articles consisted of an excisional biopsy of the lesion, followed by a condylectomy (with discectomy if clinically indicated.) Only 1 patient had the involved joint replaced with an autogenous osseous-chondral graft from the right seventh rib.…”

Immediate reconstruction of the TMJ with total joint arthroplasty is a safe and effective measure following removal of this (and potentially other) TMJ lesions.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
