Bilateral Testicular Tumor

Abstract: Of 396 cases of bilateral testicular tumors reported in the literature through 1979 the tumors were the same histologically in 217 cases (seminoma in 163 and nonseminoma in 54), different in 47 and malignant lymphomas in 68; no histological details were given in 64 cases. In our 18 cases of bilateral testicular tumors the tumors were the same histologically in 5 patients (seminoma in 4 and nonseminoma in 1), different in 6 and malignant lymphomas in 7. The epidemiology, interval between the first and second tu… Show more

“…In the report by Fossa and Aass [13], metachronous testicular cancer fol lowing chemotherapy was observed in 5 of 303 patients (1.7%). Various other investigators described patients with a contralateral testicular cancer after chemotherapy [8,[14][15][16][17], However, some of these cases received their initial treatment prior to the cisplatin era and treatment details are often not provided by the authors.…”

“…These rates, however, are different from actuarial risk and unfortunately are not comparable across studies. In addition, incidences are difficult to compare since some series included synchronous tumors and others included lymphomas (5,6,(11)(12)(13). Furthermore, some series may not have included seminoma and nonseminoma tumors in representative proportions, which may also explain differences between incidence rates.…”

“…These comprise mainly nongerminal neoplasms [4,6] and, more rarely, synchronous bilateral germ cell tumors (SBTT). In 1985, a study, summarizing 89 cases of the literature with mainly bilateral seminoma, was pub lished [7], Different histology in SBTT is an exceedingly rare finding.…”

“…A survey of the literature revealed a total of 151 previously described cases of synchronous bilateral germ cell tumors, the majority of which presenting as bilateral seminoma. Treatment of synchronous bilateral germ cell tumors with dissimilar histology should consist of bilateral orchiec tomy and bilateral retroperitoneal lymph node dissection.About 2.5% of all patients with testicular germ cell tumor (GCT) develop contralateral neoplasia [1], Since second tumors may occur even after 5 or more years, a follow-up period of at least 10 years has been proposed [2], The clinical importance of metachronous bilateral testicular tumors has been established in numerous pub lications [3][4][5], Simultaneous involvement of both testes with malignant tumor is still among the clinical rarities. These comprise mainly nongerminal neoplasms [4,6] and, more rarely, synchronous bilateral germ cell tumors (SBTT).…”
