Bile duct cysts in adults

Abstract: An increasing rate of occurrence of bile duct cyst is reported in adults. Type IV cysts are more frequent in adults than children. Presentation tends to be non-specific abdominal discomfort. Related hepatobiliary or pancreatic disease frequently precedes recognition, and may complicate the postoperative course. Surgical treatment aims to relieve complications deriving from the cysts and to reduce the significant risk of malignant change within the biliary tree. Complete cyst resection, cholecystectomy and Roux… Show more

“…Other studies also demonstrate an association between metabolic syndrome and CCA, which could lead to increased incidence in Western countries given the rising prevalence of obesity 31,32 . Hepatolithiasis, as well as congenital biliary tract malformations such as Caroli disease and bile duct cysts, also predisposes to the development of CCA 33,34 . All these risk factors share, as a putative pathogenic mech anism, chronic inflammation involving the biliary tract 34,35 .…”

“…Incidence as high as 1 per 1000 in Asia (Japan), and as low as 1 per 100 000-150 000 in the West has been reported [2,3]. Seventy to eighty percent (70-80%) of cases occur in infants and children, and the remaining 15-20% occur in adults with a male to female ratio of 1:4 [4,5]. Few cases have been reported in Nigeria and Africa [6][7][8][9].…”
