Digitalization of the AEC-FM industry has resulted in the reassessment of knowledge, knowledge management, teaching and learning, workflows and networks, roles, and relevance. Consequently, new approaches to teaching and learning to meet the demands of new jobs and abilities, new channels of communication, and a new awareness are required. Building Information Modelling (BIM) offers opportunities to address some of the current challenges through BIM-enabled education and training. This research defines the requisite characteristics of a BIM-enabled Learning Environment (BLE)—a web-based platform that facilitates BIM-enabled education and training—in order to develop a prototype version of the BLE. Using a mixed-methods research design and an Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST) perspective for interpreting the findings, 33 features and 5 distinct intentions behind those features were identified. These findings are valuable in taking forward the development of the BLE as they suggest a BLE requires the integration of functions from three existing types of information technology application (virtual learning environments, virtual collaboration platforms, and BIM applications). This study will inform the design of a web-based BLE for enhanced AEC-FM education and training, and it also provides a starting point for researchers to apply AST to evaluate the use of a BLE in different educational and training contexts.

Innovations offered by digital technologies to architecture, civil engineering and construction can significantly alter professional practices. Among the alternatives, BIM (Building Information Modeling) can accelerate the design management through a process based on the interoperability, leading architects, and engineers to work collaboratively. Since 2007, there was a huge increase on research related to BIM possibilities. However, the rapid pace of research has not been accompanied by the necessary changes in the curriculum of architecture and civil engineering undergraduate courses. In Brazil, Decree No. 9,983 of 2019 stablished the basis for BIM’s National Strategy, starting initiatives to leverage actions promoting gains in productivity and competitiveness in the civil construction sector. This paper presents the results of a research that aims to analyses the potential of BIM Domain Model Uses as an alternative to stablish a pathway for including BIM in architecture undergraduate teaching process. A case study has been conducted in two phases: the analysis of the current curriculum of the architecture undergraduate course of a Brazilian Faculty and the analysis of the new curriculum recently approved by the institution. Preliminary result allows to identify alternatives to include BIM since the first periods of the course, increasing gradually in complexity until the capstone project. Among the aspects to be considered, the adoption of a collaborative teaching process is the most important. However, the mindsets and attitudes need to change to fully take advantage of BIM potentialities in architecture teaching.

artigo pretende estudar a utilização do uso do BIM e LC em canteiro de obras. Adotou-se o estudo de caso com aplicação de um questionário para médias e grandes empresas construtoras localizadas na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro/RJ. Os principais resultados demostram que o baixo conhecimento sobre o BIM e LC, a percepção de alto custo frente à potenciais ganhos a médio e longo prazo são as principais dificuldades na adoção do BIM e do LC. No entanto, são apresentadas recomendações que podem auxiliar na adoção deles, tais como: a inclusão da implementação do BIM e do LC dentro dos objetivos do plano estratégico, com metas e planos de ação que podem favorecer a implementação de forma sustentável; integração entre projetistas; e treinamento adequado aos colaboradores. Por fim, concluiu-se que é necessário um levantamento completo dos custos envolvidos na implantação dessas novas formas de trabalhar nos canteiros de obras e que seus benefícios possam contribuir para o aumento da eficácia da construção civil brasileira.
