Speech-motor and psycholinguistic models employ feedback control from an auditory stream corresponding to own voice. Such models underspecify how own voice is identified. It is proposed that coincidence detection between cochlear and vestibular streams identifies own voice in mammals (H1) and that the coincidence detection differs in people who stutter (H2). Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP), an indirect measure of vestibular function, was assessed in 15 people who stutter, with controls paired on age and sex. VEMP amplitude was 8.5 dB smaller in people who stutter than paired controls (p = 0.035, 95% CI [-0.9, -16.1], t = -2.1, d = -0.8, conditional R2 = 0.88), suggesting an approximate halving in how they perceptually experience the vestibular component of own voice. H1 and H2 are supported in this initial test of both hypotheses. Discussion covers own voice identification, persistent developmental stuttering, speech-induced suppression, auditory scene analysis, and theories of mental content.

Previous studies on vertical or full-spherical directivity patterns of the human voice showed that the human voice has a slightly downward main radiation direction over a wide frequency range. This paper investigates the phoneme-dependencies of human voice radiation in the vertical plane and analyzes to what extent these characteristics affect the ground reflection and the sound incidence at a listener position. The results show that for most phonemes and below 800 Hz, the ground reflection is stronger than the direct sound component because of the downward-directed main radiation. On the contrary, between 800 Hz and 1.6 kHz, the main radiation direction is upward, probably mainly due to diffraction and reflections from the shoulders and the torso.

Dynamic directivity is a specific characteristic of the human voice, showing time-dependent variations while speaking or singing. To study and model the human voice's articulation-dependencies and provide datasets that can be applied in virtual acoustic environments, full-spherical voice directivity measurements were carried out for 13 persons while articulating eight phonemes. Since it is nearly impossible for subjects to repeat exactly the same articulation numerous times, the sound radiation was captured simultaneously using a surrounding spherical microphone array with 32 microphones and then subsequently spatially upsampled to a dense sampling grid. Based on these dense directivity patterns, the spherical voice directivity was studied for different phonemes, and phoneme-dependent variations were analyzed. The differences between the phonemes can, to some extent, be explained by articulation-dependent properties, e.g., the mouth opening size. The directivity index, averaged across all subjects, varied by a maximum of 3 dB between any of the vowels or fricatives, and statistical analysis showed that these phoneme-dependent differences are significant.
