“…There are now very conflicting data on the uptake of HPV vaccinations among SGMY. Similar to our study, SGMY in a much smaller sample found an HPV vaccination rate of 10% [ 21 ]. Yet, other researchers did find higher vaccination rates among SGMY compared to heterosexual peers [ 15 ].…”

“…These youth have significant histories of risk behaviors associated with HIV (multiple sexual partners without condoms and STIs), as well as out-of-home placements (that is, homelessness, incarceration, mental health hospitalization, and drug treatment). In contrast to recent studies of HPV vaccinations among young people [ 21 ], our sample also reflects sociodemographic factors characterizing those who become HIV infected: 2/3 of the youth are SGMY, and about 80% are African American or Latina/o/x. These life histories place the young people at risk for long-term negative health outcomes, including both HIV and HPV.…”

“…The 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey reports that the number of young adults 18–26 years who initiated (21%) or completed (18%) the HPV vaccination series was very low, particularly when compared with the Healthy People 2030 target of 80% for HPV vaccine uptake by ages 13–15 years ( 16 ). Therefore, within a college/university setting, it is likely that a significant number of sexually active young adults are unvaccinated.…”

“…Given their potentially greater propensity for unsafe, at-risk behavioral practices compared with other age groups, these young adults are vulnerable to HPV infections and therefore susceptible to HPV-associated cancers. The 2017 survey also indicates that 18–26 year-old men were least likely to be vaccinated ( 16 ). It is of concern that men who have sex with men or identify as gay or bisexual have an increased prevalence of HPV infection ( 17 ).…”
