Bio-corrosion of carbon steel by sulfate reducing bacteria consortium in oil and gas pipelines

Abstract: This research is aimed to give an overview of the impact of bio-corrosion on carbon steel grade API 5L X-70 immersed in growth medium and exposed to SRB consortium. Simulation of anaerobic corrosion conditions was carried out in a laboratory for 28 days. Raw crude oil gathered from the Baram Delta Operation Terminal was cultured in broth number 1249 (Modified Barr's Medium) to study the effect of bacteria growth upon metal loss. Carbon steel coupons grade X70 were cut to approximately 10mm x 20mm x 5mm and imm… Show more

“…Microbes have an important role in bioremediation of oil compounds, but microbial contamination of oil and natural gas facilities is undesired because they may metabolize hydrocarbons, change sulfur content, and influence oil density and viscosity. The anaerobic conditions found in the oil industry, combined with the large availability of substrates for microorganisms (e.g., hydrocarbons and organosulfur compounds), favor the appearance of biofilms causing microbial influenced corrosion (Vigneron et al, 2016;Abu Bakar et al, 2017;Li et al, 2017). However, aerobic microorganisms such as Pseudomonas sp.…”

“…For DNA extraction, 10 ml was used, while 20 ml was collected for hydrocarbon extractions. The cell concentration was calculated from 10 ll of sample using a Neubauer counting chamber with an optical microscope at a magnification of 409 (29 objective) (Abu Bakar et al 2017). The assay was conducted in duplicate.…”

“…It is important in risk management of the oil production/processing equipment to predict the rate of erosion damages accurately. Similar to corrosion [1,2], sand erosion is a complicated process, depends on many parameters, such as: sand properties and particle tracks, fluid flow, surface conditioning and multi-phase effects among others.…”
