Bio-Monitoring using Lead Isotope Ratios in Seagrass and Oysters

Abstract: The combined measurement of lead concentration and isotope ratios in organisms used as bio-monitors may provide a sensitive and cost-effective monitoring tool allowing an unambiguous assessment of the source of lead in environmental samples. Data presented here shows that dispersion of trace amounts of orederived Pb produced distinctive Pb isotope ratio changes in seagrass and oysters acting as sentinel accumulators.

“…Other lead isotopic composition measurements include the preceding studies of lead contamination in dandelions and chocolate . There have also been reports on lead isotopic compositions of fruits and vegetables, cane and sugar beets, maize, wheat, , rice, honey, , finfish, shellfish, tea, cocoa, vinegar, and alcoholic beverages other than wine . In addition, there has been a surprisingly disproportionate number of reports on lead isotopic compositions of wine. …”

“…[50−53] In the example given in Figure 6, the isotopes of lead are used to determine if an ore-loading facility is contaminating a marine environment which has highly variable background concentrations of lead. [53] The ore is enriched in 207 Pb and 208 Pb relative to background sediments, which have greater 206 Pb levels due to the natural decay of uranium and thorium in the environment. Transplantation of oysters near the ore loading facility clearly show enrichment with 207 Pb and 208 Pb, indicating that sea water is being contaminated with ore-derived lead.…”

“…35 To date, only a handful of studies have determined Pb isotopic composition in soft tissues of bivalves. 28,31,[36][37][38] There have also been studies investigating lead isotopes in bivalve shells employing ICP-MS (with dissolved shell samples), 23,39 and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). 24 However, bulk analysis provides a time integrated value only, which reflects accumulation of the element over the entire life of the animal, and may not be representative due to intra-sample variability.…”
