Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Cashew Apple (Anacardium Occidentale L.) From Commercial Early Dwarf Clones

Abstract: Fruit antioxidant activity is related to compounds such as vitamins and phenolics, which play an effective role on free radical scavenging. Such activity varies among species and cultivars. The aim of this work was to evaluate and quantify antioxidant compounds on cashew apples from different early dwarf clones. The following analyses were done: vitamin C, total carotenoids, total anthocyanins, yellow flavonoids, total extractable phenolics, and total antioxidant activity. The cashew apples were harvested at t… Show more

“…Our data for total polyphenol content of mon-pu (Glochidion perakense; 4762.76 mg GAE/ 100 g), spiny taro (Lasia spinosa; 209.28 mg GAE/100 g), and Spanish joint fir (Gnetum gnemon; 253.45 mg GAE/100 g) are quite similar to those reported previously (Tangkanakul, Trakoontivakorn, & Jariyavattanavijit, 2005). Total polyphenols in ripe cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale; 404.47 mg GAE/100 g) were greater than the data reported by Abreu, Maia, Figueiredo, Sousa Alves, and Brito 2009, which ranged from 99.53 to 236.97 mg GAE/100 g.…”

“…The protective effect of cashew apple against free radicals has been attributed to the presence of phytochemicals with antioxidant properties. 27 Total phenolics and vitamin C are bioactive compounds that directly contribute to the total antioxidant activity of such fruit 28 and therefore, the significant differences in the antioxidant composition observed between UNCAJ and RCAJ may be related to ripening metabolism. 29 Similar data were observed by De Figueiredo et al 30 during the development and maturation of cashew apple.…”

“…In a screening of 15 olive tree clones, some were found to have high total polyphenol, oleic and linoleic acid contents [33]. The vitamin C, total carotenoid, total anthocyanin, yellow flavonoids and polyphenol contents and total antioxidant capacity were analyzed in clones of cashew apples, and differences were found between clones [34,35]. Dietary fiber and phenolic compounds were also found to be high in selected clones of acerola and cashew apple [36].…”
