Bioactive compounds in lettuce: Highlighting the benefits to human health and impacts of preharvest and postharvest practices

Abstract: Lettuce is one of the most commonly consumed leafy vegetables worldwide and is available throughout the entire year. Lettuce is also a significant source of natural phytochemicals. These compounds, including glycosylated flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, the vitamin B groups, ascorbic acid, tocopherols, and sesquiterpene lactones, are essential nutritional bioactive compounds. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the composition of health‐promoting compounds in different types of… Show more

“…On the whole, probiotics – especially lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium are considered to be safe supplements for healthy individuals of all ages, [ 26 ] and comprise a successful adjuvant therapy for cancer patients. [ 38,39 ] However, we note that some studies have reported adverse effects experienced by immunocompromised people following probiotic administration, such as excessive immune stimulation, infection (i.e., endocarditis and bacteremia), transmigration of pathogenic bacteria, and transfer of antibiotic resistance from probiotics to pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Tetracycline resistance among Lactobacillus Plantarum , Vancomycin resistance across many lactobacilli strains).…”

“…Agronomic management has been widely used to regulate the quality of vegetables (Yang et al, 2021). Current studies indicate that the method and timing of application of Se fertilizers, mineral elements in the rhizosphere, and external conditions affect the levels of Se-AAs in various plant species, though only a few studies have investigated these factors in vegetables.…”

“…Lettuce is rich in water with 94–95% content and low in calories. It is also an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and chlorophyll with related health benefits [ 3 ]. Additionally, phytochemical compositions and contents are different in various types.…”
