Bioactive Compounds of Citrus Fruits: A Review of Composition and Health Benefits of Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Limonoids, and Terpenes

Abstract: The increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contributes to the reduced risk of many diseases related to metabolic syndrome, including neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and cancer. Citrus, the genus Citrus L., is one of the most important fruit crops, rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, limonoids, and many other bioactive compounds of nutritional and nutraceutical value. Moreover, polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs), a unique class of bioactive flavono… Show more

“…This increase in Bifidobacterium and reduction in lipid parameters and glucose also appear to be crucial for the greater reduction in rat body weight after the application of the laurel EO to rats ( Figure 3 ). A similar effect on body weight was described with citrus peel EO and lime EO [ 39 , 40 ]. These data appear to support the traditional application of laurel EO to the digestive system in the treatment of digestive symptoms, such as epigastric bloating, indigestion, eructation, and bloating.…”

“…These fruits are rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, limonoids, and many other bioactive compounds of nutritional and nutraceutical value, including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs). These flavones were shown to elicit several bioactive effects against metabolic disorders, atherosclerosis, inflammation, neuroinflammation, cancer, and oxidation (reviewed in [164]). In addition, citrus essential oils are rich in limonoids and terpenes, which are widely appreciated for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and flavoring properties with broad industrial applications [164].…”

In addition, citrus essential oils are rich in limonoids and terpenes, which are widely appreciated for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and flavoring properties with broad industrial applications [164]. Citrus peels are the main residue originating from citrus fruit, being very rich in dietary fibers (cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin), bioactive compounds (phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and carotenoids), and vitamin C [90,165,166].…”

“…As a versatile nutraceutical class, flavonoid affords many human-health-friendly benefits. Flavonoids can be used in various ailments and also an effective anticancer agent [ 19 , 81 ]. In case of lung cancer, flavonoids have shown efficacy via multiple pathways that lead to apoptosis induction, cell cycle arrest, and modulation of carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes [ 82 ].…”
