Bioactive furanocoumarins from the berries of Zanthoxylum americanum

Abstract: Crude extracts of the berries of Zanthoxylum americanum showed significant lethality to brine shrimp larvae and exhibited cytotoxicity to human tumor cells. Activity-directed fractionation led to 5 furanocoumarias (cnidilin, imperatorin, isoimperatorin, psoralen, and xanthotoxin), the last three of which are bioactive in these bioassays. All were previously known as natural compounds but are new to this plant species.

“…For example, most Zanthoxylum extracts have antioxidant properties. [ ][ ] These also account for several types of biological activities such as hepatoprotective, anti‐inflammatory or antibiotic effects, developed by the pharmaceutical, medical or biocides industries . Zanthoxylum fruits or leaves are interesting for the production of high value essential oils designed to cosmetics and fragrances industries.…”

“…It was extensively used by Native Americans and nineteenth century physicians (Bruneton, 1995;Cluaus, 1959). Earlier phytochemical work on the bark and berries resulted in the identification of some coumarins and alkaloids (Fish et al, 1975;Saqib et al, 1990;Robert and Sabramanin, 1937). Coumarins constitute a major class of O-heterocyclic natural products with widespread distribution and broad pharmacological profile (Fish et al, 1976;Murray, 1991;Murray and Forbes, 1967), including anticancer, carcinogenic and antiviral (HIV) activities (Gustatson et al, 1994).…”

“…In studies done on this species, from the bark of Z. schinifolium were isolated auraptene 33 and collinine 34, terpenylcoumarins with antiplatelet activity and inhibitory activity of DNA replication in hepatitis B virus . Furanocoumarins with cytotoxic activity against human tumor cells have been found in berries of Z. americanum, for example psoralen 35 (Saquib et al, 1990).…”
