Plants are an excellent source of herbal medicines and their natural products have antimicrobial potential for the management of numerous diseases. This study investigated the antileishmanial activity (IC50 -50% inhibitory activity) of Curcuma longa (rhizome) crude extracts (80% methanol, chloroform, and acetone) against (Leishmania donovani) promastigote and amastigote forms. All three extracts of C. longa exhibited antileishmanial activity on both forms of parasite Leishmania. Miltefosine was used as a reference drug in this study. The methanolic extract showed the maximum antileishmanial activity followed by chloroform and acetone extract against both the forms promastigotes and amastigotes. The cytotoxicity (CC50) of these extracts were evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay which was ranging from 889.89 to 969.01 µg/ml. The safety parameter was determined in terms of selectivity index (SI) which was found to be highest for methanolic extract (46.71) followed by chloroform (26.38), reference drug miltefosine (11.65) and acetone extract (4.41). Further, GC-MS analysis of 80% methanolic extract was carried out and identified 51 compounds, out of which were secondary metabolite (2,3-dihydrobenzofuran) sesquiterpenes, terpenoids, monoterpene and phenolic acids was most prominent that could be responsible for its antileishmanial activity. The results revealed that all three extracts have potent antileishmanial activity and it could be used in the formulation of herbal medicine against L. donovani in future prospect.

Honey bee propolis is a complex, resinous mixture created by bees using plant sources such as leaves, flowers, and bud exudates. This study characterized how cropland surrounding apiaries affects the chemical composition and antimicrobial effects of propolis. The chemical composition and compound abundance of the propolis samples were analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the antimicrobial effects were analyzed using the 50% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50) assay against four relevant bee pathogens, Serratia marcescens, Paenibacillus larvae, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Propolis composition varied significantly with apiary, and cropland coverage predicted mean sum abundance of compounds. The apiary with the highest cropland coverage exhibited significantly higher MIC50 values for S. marcescens and K. pneumoniae compared to other apiaries. These results demonstrate that agricultural land use surrounding honey bee apiaries decreases the chemical quality and antimicrobial effects of propolis, which may have implications for the impacts of land use on hive immunity to potential pathogens.

Dried and roasted chilies are used in many recipes due to higher pungency, especially in Asia. However, the roasting process is usually done on a pan, or wok without temperature control. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of different hot air oven drying temperatures (60, 80 and 100 °C), roasting temperatures (120, 140 and 160 °C) and times (30, 60, 120 min and at 12–13% moisture content (MC)) on the physicochemical changes in dried ‘Super Hot’ chili fruits. High antioxidant compounds that have health benefits were detected in dried chili samples such as capsaicinoids, limonene, pinene, tocopherol, and oleic acid regardless of temperature and time of drying. Chilies dried at 60 °C until reaching 12–13% MC (1440 min) had better color retention and DPPH• values. In contrast, the contents of bioactive compounds were the highest at 160 °C, despite having a darker red color. This result showed that chilies dried or roasted at high temperatures allowed the bioactive compounds to be released from the bound state and can be easily absorbed during consumption. Thus, hot air oven roasting at 160 °C can be applied to improve bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in ‘Super Hot’ chili for health benefits and taste.
