Bioactive Prenylated Xanthones from the Young Fruits and Flowers of Garcinia cowa

Abstract: Five new xanthones, garciniacowones A-E (1-5), together with 14 known xanthones, 6-19, were isolated from the young fruits and fresh flowers of Garcinia cowa. The structures of 1-5 were elucidated by analysis of their 1D and 2D NMR spectra and mass spectrometric data. The compounds 1-19 were tested in vitro for their antimicrobial activity and for their ability to inhibit α-glucosidase. Compounds 16 and 17 showed the most potent α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 7.8 ± 0.5 and 8.7 ± 0.3 μM,… Show more

“…The other tested compounds were less effective, with IC 50 values ranging from 11.7 ± 0.1 to 55.3 ± 0.2 mM[55]. The 12 xanthones 81 and 102e112 isolated from the bark of G. xanthochymus exhibited a strong activity in the inhibition of a-glucosidase, except for compounds 81 and 104 which were inactive in this assay.…”

“…Plants of the Garcinia species (Clusiaceae family) are known to possess oxygenated and prenylated xanthones. The structures isolated from different parts of eight species (G. mangostana [44], G. nobilis [54], G. cowa [55], G. xanthochymus [62], G. oblongifolia [63], G. fusca [42], G. paucinervis [45] and G. hanburyi [49]) and their inhibitory activity against a-glucosidase are presented in Table 4.…”

“…The reaction was incubated at 37°C for 20 min and stopped by the addition of 1 mL 1 M of Na 2 CO 3 solution. The α-glucosidase activity was determined by measuring the amount of p-nitrophenol released from p-NPG at 405 nm using a microplate reader (SPECTROstar Nano) [16]. Blanks were prepared by adding solvent instead of samples.…”

“…The latter compounds were founds as major phytochemicals in this genus and many of these compounds had broad spectrum biological activities such as anti-inflammatory [4] and anti-HIV activities [7], cholinesterase [5] and PDE5 inhibitory activities [8], and their antimicrobial [9], cytotoxic [10], and antioxidant [2] activities. In the course of our ongoing search for bioactive compounds from natural resources from the northern part of Thailand [12][13][14][15][16], we report here the first phytochemical investigation of the twig extracts of M. fruticosa (Roxb.) Corner (Figure 1) collected from Doi Tung, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand resulting in the isolation and identification of a new xanthone (1) together with 14 known compounds (2-15) ( Figure 2).…”
