Biobased Natural Sapindus mukorossi–Carvacrol Emulsion for Sustainable Laundry Washing

Manca Lunder,
Brigita Tomšič,
Rok Fink

Abstract: Low-temperature laundry washing prompted the formulation of a new biobased detergent that meets sustainability criteria. A soapnut extract conferred good cleaning performance on the standard soiling agents EMPA 101 and EMPA 114 but showed rather weak performance on EMPA 116 and EMPA 160. The results indicated the good disinfection properties of the soapnut extract–Carvacrol emulsion (>6 log CFU/carriers), whereas the commercial detergent and sole soapnut extract were less effective. Comparable results were … Show more

“…With the increasing demand for cleanliness and hygiene, laundry detergents, one of the main homecare detergents, are becoming a major environmental and human problem. , Especially for pregnant women and children, heavy laundry detergent use can cause irritation and inflame airways, posing health risks. , Furthermore, the degradation of the ecosystem by surfactants in laundry detergents is continuously a challenge due to their ability to accumulate in the ecosystem . Fu et al have also pointed out this issue and proposed using hydrophilic biobased polymers to coat fabrics, imparting underwater antioil staining properties.…”
