Biochemical and Histological Evaluation of different intra-articular injections as therapy for Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis in Rats

Abstract: Introduction: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis is usually treated by intraarticular injection of medications. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injection reduces friction and stress on the joint cartilage through lubrication, chondro-protection and proteoglycans synthesis. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) with its high concentration of growth factors plays a great role in joint repair through enhancing osteo-inductivity, and chondrogenic differentiation. This study aims at comparing intra-articular in… Show more

“…Regarding the IL-1β level, the current study reported significantly high levels of IL-1β in the control group. This corresponds to the previous studies which reported that IL-1β has a major role in the pathogenesis of the degenerative changes in TMJ OA (19) . These results support the research results of Zhang et al (20) who demonstrated that fibrosis ,a shift to chronic inflammation and subsequent degeneration of TMJ are caused by IL-1B .…”

“…After OA induction, the animals received 300 mg/kg of acetaminophen (Paracetamol) added to drinking water to alleviate pain [15] . Each study animal's contralateral right TMJ was left unaltered in order to preserve animal feeding [16] .…”

“…Subgroup A: Hyaluronic acid group (HA): consisted of 6 rats. Each rat received 3 intra-articular injections of 50µl high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA) (2.3-2.5 million Daltons) [16] (Optivisc, UK) into the upper compartment of the left TMJs on days 7, 14 and 28 after induction of osteoarthritis.…”
